Voici quelques informations concernant les Frères de l’Instruction chrétienne en Haïti

Frères d’Haïti - Essai de bilan – Jeudi 14 janvier - 2h pm

 

Maison provinciale : la maison provinciale s’est complètement écroulée. Quatre Frères étaient présents. Trois se trouvaient au troisième étage sur la terrasse. Ils ont été projetés à terre. Fr. Joseph Bergot a reçu en plus une poutre : il est mort mercredi malgré son hospitalisation au Canapé-Vert. Fr. Rancourt a des douleurs très importantes aux jambes et au dospeut-être des fractures. Fr. Fernand Doyon est presque indemne : une petite blessure au front. Fr. Rancourt et Fr. Fernandtous deux Canadienssont maintenant à leur ambassade en attente d’être rapatriés dans leur pays. Fr. Dominique Baron se trouvait au rez-de-chausséede retour de son travail : la maison s’est écroulée sur luiil est toujours sous les décombresprobablement décédé.

 

Noviciat : aucune victime mais les murs du noviciat ont de grosses lézardes. Fr. Simonmaître des novices cherche à les transférer ailleurs.

 

Juvénat : aucune victime. Les murs ont été lézardés. Le bâtiment du grand juvénat paraît très fragilisé et pourrait s’écrouler. Le Juvénat accueille plus de 2000 sans-abri sur son terrain.

 

École de Pétionville : ne semble pas avoir beaucoup souffert.

 

École Jean-Marie Guilloux : complètement écroulée.

 

Saint-Louis-de-Gonzague – rue du Centre : pas de victimes. Le bâtiment de la Procure et le bâtiment de la rue du centre sont écroulés. La résidence est très fragilisée. Je ne sais pas pour la chapelle et la bibliothèque haïtienne.

 

Saint-Louis-de-Gonzague – Delmas : pas de victimes. La résidence des Frères s’est écroulée. Dans les bâtiments des classes portes fenêtres et murs sont tombés. La structure pourrait avoir résisté. Nombreuses lézardes dans les autres bâtiments. Les terrains de l’école ont accueilli des centaines de sans-abris.

 

La Vallée : « A La Vallée plusieurs petites maisons sont endommagées elles n'étaient pas très solides. Aucun mort ni de blessés graves. Notre communauté est fissurée par endroits. Nous accueillons sur notre cour une centaine de personnes tous les soirs. » (Fr. Lamy Dessalines)

 

Jacmel : pas de victimes. La résidence des Frères est écroulée. Les Frères logent dans les classes.

 

Les autres communautés et écoles n’ont pas subi de dégâts et ne déplorent aucune victime : Saint-Marc – Le Cap – Ouanaminthe – Les Cayes

Nouvelles très partielles d’autres communautés
Archevêché : l’archevêque Mgr Miot est décédé ainsi que Mgr Benoit
Séminaires : les deux locaux du Grand Séminaire (Turgeau et Cazeau) sont écroulés. Très nombreuses victimes parmi les séminaristes.
Les églises de la ville sont écroulées : Cathédrale, Ste-Anne, Sacré-Cœur, St-Louis roi de France.
Filles de Marie : les bâtiments du Bel-Air. Nombreuses victimes parmi les Sœurs.
Filles de la Sagesse : l’école du Sacré-Cœur s’est écroulée. Sr Jeannine est décédée
Frères du Sacré-Cœur : le Canado et le collège St-Jean sont écroulés. Je ne sais pas pour les Frères
Père Oblats : la maison provinciale et le scolasticat sont écroulés. Probablement quelques victimes
Sœurs de Ste-Hyacinthe : l’école qui est auprès de La Mennais s’est écrouléela maison provinciale (et de retraite) est coupée en deux morceaux.
Sœurs de St-Joseph de Cluny : Ste-Rose serait complètement écroulé. Pas de nouvelles concernant les Sœur

I have a few updates to post this morning.  Things are moving so quickly that it will be difficult for me to post regularly, but I will do my best.  

-- Overnight the first American assessment team and C-130 arrived in Haiti with the first load of supplies.  President Obama spoke this morning pledging US support.  He said that Haitians "are not foresaken and will not be forgotten".  He pledged $100 million to grow over time.  This is certainly an impressive donation.  President Obama has also reportedly expressed frustration with the response time of the US Government and announced that all the relevant agencies have been instructed that Haiti is the top priority. -- Also, the Dominican government and the Chinese government were the first two in with aid supplies and have pledged further support.

-- At this point in time, we do not know what the death tolls will be.  The Red Cross is estimating about 50,000 and the Prime Minister has said hundreds of thousands.  It is too difficult to estimate at this point, but certainly it gives us all paus.

-- The Diaspora community is focused now on getting charter flights from airlines to send down medical supplies and doctors.  We know that the medical supplies have been depleted and are the most urgent need.  We hope to have the first flight arrive on Saturday.

Ce matin a Port-au-Prince 
- Il y a beaucoup de cadavres le long de la route de Bourdon, de Delmas et bien sur de la capital.
- Certains cadavres commence à gonflés à cause de la chaleur.
- Aucun cellule de gestion de la crise n'a été mise en place.
- A Carrefour le collège Paul VI s'est effondré
- Les parcs sont transformés en campement de fortune.
- Le commissariat de police près de Saint-Louis de Gonzague à été détruit
- Avenue Christophe, le lycée Jean-Jacques Dessalines s'est effondré
- La plupart des stations service n'ont plus de carburant.
- Beaucoup de victime sous les décombres appellent encore à l'aide, mais personne n'a les moyens de les aider.
- L'Hôtel San Carlos s'est effondré, beaucoup de dominicain sont portés disparus.
- 2000 personnes sont réunis derrière le capitol, rue lamarre impasse moussin, sur 2 terrains vagues.
- Les gens remonte sur Pétionville, pensant trouvez le repos, mais aucun infrastructure pour les accueillir n'est disponible

Earthquake in Haiti, January 12, 2009 

Haiti was just hit by a 7.0 earthquake at 4:53 p.m. and 17, 5.9 aftershocks.  At this point, we don't know much about the damage, casualties or anything. The Ambassador, speaking on Wolf Blitzer on CNN, only reached the Chief of Staff at 6pm and he had not spoken to the President nor the Prime Minister.

We know that Haiti does not have a strong disaster management program -- and

scarce resources -- and so speed is of the essence here. Buildings are not built to code. Recovery is the first priority. And clearly international assistance will be critical.

Let's immediately begin to organize the Haitian Diaspora, charitable organizations and churches in the US to pull together supplies to be ready to ship.  Let us mobilize immediately to address this catastrophe.  And let us pray. STATEMENTS

President Barack Obama:

"My thoughts and prayers go out to those who have been affected by this earthquake. We are closely monitoring the situation and we stand ready to assist the people of Haiti.”

The White House also put out this background information: The President was informed of the earthquake at 5:52pm. The President asked his staff to make sure that embassy personnel are safe, and to begin preparations in the event that humanitarian assistance is needed. The Department of State, USAID and the United States Southern Command have begun working to coordinate an assessment and any such assistance.

The State Department has a post up as well, with remarks from Secretary Clinton and ways to help:

As Secretary Clinton said earlier, the U.S. government will offer assistance to Haiti and others in the region in the form of civilian and military disaster relief and humanitarian assistance.

Bank president expresses solidarity with the Haitian people

The Inter-American Development Bank today issued this statement by its president, Luis Alberto Moreno, after a major earthquake hit Haiti.

“The IDB will immediately approve a $200,000 grant for emergency assistance,” President Moreno said. “IDB emergency grants can be used to provide food, potable water, medicines and temporary shelter to victims of natural disasters.

“We are monitoring these events very closely and stand ready to help Haiti address this catastrophe. In coordination with the Haitian government, we will redirect our uncommitted portfolio to provide additional reconstruction resources at this moment of dire need. We are working with other donors to exchange information and coordinate response activities. The IDB and its staff express their solidarity with the people of Haiti.”

The 7.0-magnitude quake, one of the largest recorded in the region, shook the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, damaging numerous buildings, according to early news report

“Tragedy has yet again hit the already suffering Haitian people, this time in the form of a violent earthquake. Our thoughts are with the victims. It is at such times that people, governments and leaders across the hemisphere, as neighbors and friends of the people of Haiti, should show solidarity and support in a real, effective and immediate manner, guided by the Country’s Government, which knows best where the most urgent need lies.

From the OAS we will do everything within our means to support the victims of this catastrophic phenomenon. Assistant Secretary General Albert R. Ramdin is gathering all available information regarding human and material damages caused by the catastrophe and regarding all immediate necessities, in order to inform our Permanent Council tomorrow and allow Member States to contribute to Haiti at this time of need”.

Message de la gouverneure générale suite au tremblement de terre en Haïti

OTTAWA—Je suis avec attention et beaucoup d’inquiétude les premiers rapports concernant le tremblement de terre d’une force considérable qui vient de frapper Haïti et qui a été ressenti aussi ailleurs dans la région.

Cette catastrophe naturelle frappe un pays où les infrastructures sont des plus fragiles, les constructions souvent précaires, les conditions de vie des plus difficiles et je crains beaucoup pour sa population.

Je tiens à ce que les Haïtiennes et les Haïtiens sachent qu’ils ne sont pas seuls et que la population canadienne saura répondre devant l’urgence.
